How much time do you spend looking through job ads, searching the message boards and focusing on online job sites? While it is good to do so, you also need to create your own opportunities to land that great position. In other words, you cannot count on the perfect position to land in your lap. You don’t always have to fight off the dozens, if not hundreds, of other applicants for that one interview opportunity.

Are You Creating Your Own Opportunities?

If you are like many people, you think that the person who got the corner office and the great benefits package in the office next to you did some brownnosing or perhaps was just lucky to apply when he or she did. Chances are good that this person was more of an opportunity-creator than a lucky individual. If you demonstrate a passion for the industry and a commitment to your field, chances are good you will find more opportunities in your lap too.

Step 1 – Know Your Niche

No matter what you are looking for, such as a job or a move up in your career field, you need to find your place or niche. Look closely at this, though. Is there an area of the field of your career that is a bit underserved? Perhaps there is a way for you to fill a need that is harder to fill than what mainstream is focusing on. You may be able to do something better, cheaper or even faster than the other guy. That could make you a better choice. Find what your niche is so you know where to develop your career path.

Step 2-  Be the Expert

No matter if you are creating a name for yourself online or working on your book, the key here is to become the go-to expert in your field. Education is a part of this. Positioning yourself in the field is another part. You do want to start and work in a network group that can help you to develop even bigger connections. The key here is to work on building up who you are so that people will recognize you. This can help you to go from that low-paying entry-level position to the top of the management team.

Step 3 – Become the Giver

With all of your knowledge and know-how, now is the time to share that. This can actually help you to build a successful network, too. For example, if you share insight and information through your social networks, this will instantly allow you to connect with others in the field, including potential employers down the road. Give back by hosting a seminar or doing a class locally. This adds to your resume and boosts your name recognition.

The fact is, if you want to be in a higher position, making more money or achieving bigger things, you need to create that opportunity for yourself. Doing so does not have to be a challenge, but you do have to be creative to make it happen.
