It can be really disheartening to get hired and come on board, only to feel like things just aren’t quite right. It may just be jitters or settling in, but it’s important to stay vigilant for red flags that may indicate that your position just isn’t right for you.

Missing Information

Did you do your research? If you stumbled into this new position or didn’t know enough about the company when you came on board, don’t panic. Take a look at the people and the company history, see if there are any glaring disconnects or if something just doesn’t seem right. Asking questions during the interview can help with gaining that information, such as why are there openings, how long do employees typically work with the company, etc. Trust your instincts – you may need this job, but you don’t want to be stuck in a position that doesn’t suit you.

Disjointed Supervision

Your boss and colleagues are a huge part of your day to day functions in a position, and you don’t want animosity between you and your peers. If you’re not getting along with others and hitting a good stride when collaborating, there could be an issue. Make sure you’re not picking up on any negative vibes from your supervisor, and that you have clear expectations of how you should be performing. You know what types of personality work well with your attitude. Also, if you are able to talk to current employees, try to get information from them about the supervisor and the work environment they provide.

Company Culture

If the environment doesn’t seem right, that could be a serious sign that you are simply in the wrong place. Each company varies vastly in the benefits they provide and the expectations they hold. If you feel like your co-workers are far more lackadaisical, or if the office seems stifled and oppressive, it may mean the job is not a good fit. The corporate environment isn’t always a deal-breaker, but you know how you work best. If you’re annoyed, give it time. If you simply cannot get your work done, reconsider.
