The world has changed quite a bit in the last 18 months.

While in many cases, the job candidate has the advantage, because so many companies are trying to hire for new and reopened positions, hiring managers need to be selective in who they bring in for interviews.

People have had some time to refine their resumes and maybe add some new skills, but how can managers responsible for finding new talent ensure the candidate is a great fit for the company? What skills and abilities set apart a good hire from a great one?

Here are three things to look for:

1. Virtual skills and flexibility.

So many people spent a lot of time working from over during the pandemic. People who learned techniques to thrive in that environment — managing their own time, developing communication skills to be effective and reachable without needing too much direct management, learning how to self-manage and complete projects independently — are going to be incredible assets to your company if you’re still utilizing a remote or hybrid work model. You want someone who can get the job done, and do it well, wherever they are.

2. Technological savvy.

This goes beyond being able to set up a virtual meeting. Can they code? Do they know how to build and maintain a website? Are they skilled in speaking in the brand’s or company’s voice on social media to create engaging posts and stories that can help expand your reach? Can they fix their own IT issues? Someone who can bring to the table a depth and breadth of knowledge and an eagerness to learn and keep those skills sharp can quickly become an important member of your team.

3. Communication.

It doesn’t matter whether your company is fully in-house, fully remote, or a combination of the two. Does this job candidate speak well, sharing ideas clearly and effectively? Can they write a cohesive email? Do they know when something should be a meeting vs. an email? Someone who can explain themselves, or a topic, in an efficient manner, without repeating themselves or leaving important points out, is a highly effective communicator and a great leader in the making.

Hiring an employee is making an investment in a person while expecting them to help your company expand and continue to succeed. Finding someone who is efficient, flexible, a strong communicator, and very self-reliant frees up other people on your team to focus more on their tasks and responsibilities. Everyone wins!
