Worker incident, injury, and fatality are the most perilous parts of the warehouse industry. A tough crew can handle an accident, but prevention is the best way to keep your team safe and happy. Warehouse safety is not something to be taken lightly. Here’s what you can do to improve your warehouse’s safety.

Preventing Slips, Trips, and Falls

Your warehouse leadership begins with the basics: slips, trips, and falls. These are the three big factors that are most likely to cause a severe accident in a warehouse. Make sure all cords, wires, and cables are tucked away safely. Check that no spills have occurred that could cause a slip. And if a surface needs to be fixed, such as an area needing carpet or refinished tiling, make it a priority.

Appropriate Signage

Labeling your entire warehouse area for each respective space will make a great positive impact on the safety and security of your warehouse. This is crucial if areas require specific protective equipment, such as safety goggles, masks, or other necessary gear. You can also take care of your warehouse to paint floor lines, install safety railings, and add posts or cones when necessary.

Extensive Training

A warehouse crew needs to be highly trained, but new employees won’t always come in with the knowledge they need to maintain a safe environment as they start their position. It’s your job, and yours alone as the manager, to guarantee that each warehouse worker knows what their job will entail and how they can execute it safely and effectively.

Licensure and Codes

OSHA, the agency that monitors best practices in warehouse safety, administers regulations that will have to be visible to your entire crew. Every employee should know what standards they have to remain in accordance with to comply with OSHA. Furthermore, any specific codes or licenses needed should be on hand at all times. If your only licensed forklift operator calls in sick, nobody’s operating the forklift today. There are incredibly severe consequences for you and your warehouse operations if you are caught letting non-licensed workers operate inappropriate machinery.
