Congratulations, you’ve got the interview! When you’re looking for a job in manufacturing, it’s important to come prepared. Here are a few frequently asked questions you may be prompted with.

Are you a team player?

Hiring managers want to know you can take direction, cooperate, and follow through on a project. If they ask how you work with a team, emphasize communication skills and give an example of a time you worked well with others. Highlight a time you were able to bring people together or coordinate on a project. What hiring managers don’t want to hear is for a prospective employee to take all of the responsibility for a project when they weren’t lead. Sharing the spotlight will show a team-first attitude.

How do you work on bad projects?

When asked a question like this, focus on the positive without denying that manufacturing can be a tough business. When you’re interviewing for a job, be realistic about the problems you’ll face. Additionally, acknowledge that errors will happen. Again, giving examples of your past experience will show directly how you can be an ideal worker in a tough setting.

How do you deal workplace conflict?

Showcase the best parts of your personality if asked this question. Use this as an opportunity to talk about ways you are able to handle a situation on the job. If you work well under pressure, stay organized, or mediate communication during a conflict, share that with your interviewer. Find a situation where you had an issue with a personality of a team member who you didn’t get along with and talk about what you learned from the situation. Did you work it out together? Did you sit down with a manager and find common ground? What would you do differently now (or the same?)

What did you learn from each situation?

Remember that every workplace frustration is a challenge, and by conquering it then you have more skills and insight than you did previously. Mention your ability to overcome barriers and learn from mistakes, and the hiring manager will feel confident you can handle any situation. Any effective examples you can provide would be helpful to your chances in getting the job.
