Congratulations, you’ve got an interview! This is only the beginning of your journey to join the ranks of a new organization, so you want to give the best impression possible. Don’t panic! Start off on the right foot by impressing your interviewer with informed knowledge and professional questions, and your future employer will see the potential.

1. Come Prepared

There is no shame in practicing. Everyone should take time to prep before walking into an interview. Going in blind and trying to wing it can lead to babbling and simple mistakes. Practicing is a great way to avoid walking into an interview feeling intimidated. Borrow a friend or family member to test out what you’d like to get across to an interviewer. They’ll be able to stop you in your tracks if you’re speaking too quickly or not being articulate enough.

2. Be Focused

Concentrate on key points and attributes about you. During your preparation, think about your strengths and weaknesses as well as past experiences they could ask. If you get lost in anecdotes and last-minute questions, you’ll appear rushed and disorganized. When it’s your turn to ask the hiring manager questions, focus on areas that will give you an idea of what the job will be like, and make sure to cover all the basics: Salary, benefits, performance expectations, and any other features pertaining to the position.

3. Know the Company

Do your research! So many young interviewees walk into their prospective company blind without being able to answer basic questions about the corporation they are looking to be a part of. Cover your bases, because the best way to stay cool once your interview begins is by knowing your stuff. Google them, or ask colleagues about their reputation or services. 15 minutes of research is all you will need. Know the job description, check out the different pages on the website, search for them on social media and also talk to your friends to see if they know anything about the company. A couple of little facts could be the difference between getting the job and staying unemployed.

If you’re feeling the pressure for a big interview, the best thing you can do to stay calm is walk in the door knowing you’ve got the information down. Know your strengths, know the company, and know what you want to say. For more tips, check out our resources at Davis Staffing, a top Chicago staffing firm.
