Embrace Your Next Networking Event

Networking events are an important part of your career. However, they can be stressful, overwhelming and even downright annoying for some people. But, you must understand that networking events can provide a big break in your career. You could be introduced to potential employers, future co-workers and even future employees. Even if you are not looking for a new job, a networking event can send your career in the right direction. Embrace the next networking event you attend because it could make all the difference in the world.

Have a Plan of Action

An excellent way to embrace your next career networking event is to have a plan. You should never walk into an event without a plan because it’s easy to look out of place. Your plan should include how you will introduce yourself to people, what you want to accomplish, how you want to come across to others and much more. Your plan should be well thought out and should change with each event because you could meet the same people at different events. The plan should also include methods you can use to make an impression on everyone you meet.

Try to Keep Nerves at a Minimum

Do your best to feel comfortable throughout the entire networking event.  Nerves can be easy to pick out of a crowd, especially at these types of events. When you let your nerves get the best of you, it becomes easier to make mistakes. Those nerves also comes through in your speech and how you shake hands with people you meet. It is easier said than done to keep your nerves at a minimum, but it must be done in order to be successful. A lot of times, people who come across as confidence are nervous but they are able to “fake it” and portray a confident image.

Execute Your Plan

Prior to walking into the event, take a deep breath to calm your nerves. Do not rush into things when walking inside, but instead, slowly make your way to the check-in table and then to the main room. Once in the main room, you can begin to execute your plan to the best of your ability. Do not skip anything in your plan or else you could risk knocking yourself off the tracks. You spent time creating a plan so throwing it in the garbage upon arrival makes it worthless and can lead to poor decisions that waste time.
